Exploring Surf Fishing and AI: How My Passion Led to Custom ChatGPTs
I was first introduced to surf fishing by my best friend, and from the moment I made my first cast, I was hooked. Living in Delaware, where you can drive onto the beach and fish while spending time with family and friends, has made surf fishing a core part of my life. Every summer, my wife, three kids, and I spend our weekends at the drive-on beach, meeting up with family and friends. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation, social connection, and the thrill of fishing.
As my love for surf fishing grew, so did my curiosity about how emerging technologies could enhance the experience. I’ve been actively exploring generative AI in my professional life, leading the adoption of AI tools at work. This exploration naturally spilled into my personal life, where I’ve been finding new and creative ways to use AI. I wanted to put my growing Gen AI skills to practical use to help people—and surf fishing was the perfect place to start.

Lessons from Building AI-Powered Surf Fishing Assistants
Building these custom ChatGPTs was an exciting learning experience. I’ve been researching AI by reading books, blogs, listening to podcasts, and applying my knowledge in real-world scenarios. The more I experiment with Gen AI, the better I become at leveraging it effectively.
One key lesson I’ve learned is that the quality of a ChatGPT’s responses is directly tied to the effort put into crafting the prompts. The more thought and structure I give to the prompts, the better the output and user experience. Additionally, integrating knowledge bases and relevant website links enhances the AI’s ability to provide valuable, actionable responses. Another best practice I’ve adopted is having my ChatGPTs ask users one question at a time—this ensures a more personalized and accurate interaction.
The Impact So Far
When I shared the first custom ChatGPT on LinkedIn, I received a great response—many people liked the idea, and I could see that the AI assistant was being actively used. Users even provided feedback, which I quickly implemented to improve the tool. You can check out my LinkedIn post here: LinkedIn Post on Surf Fishing ChatGPT.
The second ChatGPT, focused on Delaware surf fishing regulations, is still in its early stages, but I’m excited to see how it helps people navigate the complexities of permits and rules.
The Future of AI in Hobbies and Outdoor Activities
I believe AI has the power to help people build their knowledge and confidence to try new hobbies. Whether it’s surf fishing or another outdoor activity, AI can serve as a guide, making it easier for people to get started and have successful experiences. With surf fishing, I see AI helping people not only understand the basics but also increase their chances of catching fish—which, in turn, makes them more likely to stick with the hobby.
